"English" language books, magazines and newspapers are expensive in Italy. When I was back in the States in June, 2009, my wife and I picked up as many paperbacks that we could carry back with us without going over the current weight restrictions. I carried most of my paperback selections and magazines in a canvas bag as part of my carry-on allowance because it is NOT weighted. However, this situation is changing. Also, when we have friends and family visiting us in Italy, I ask if they don't mind to bring one or two current best sellers or another book that I am interested in reading and leaving them with us. Of course, we reimburse these individuals for their expenditure(s) by either paying for the books in Euros (€) or taking them out to dinner.

One other venue that my wife and I have used to get "English" language books is to attend a book swap that an individual or a group of Expats living in Italy from various countries have organized for part of the day. I have to admit to everyone that I am an individual that enjoys holding a book in my hands and turning the page one by one.
